Hello all. I have a 1985 Mercury s/n 6628510 with Mercontrol remote controls. The motor is presently on one boat, and I want to move it to another one. My question is this, how does one remove the cables, (throttle and shifter) from the motor. I see where it attaches to the motor there is a threaded rod attached to the cable, but I do not see how the cable can be removed from the rod. Should I detach the cable from the remote control section of the control or is this a bad idea? I need to detach the cables so that I can rerun them in my other boat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mercury Controls

The threaded rod is part of the cable and cannot be separated. The cables can be removed from the motor easily. The cables pass through a rubber grommet on the front of the motor on the port side. Just inside the grommet is a mechanism which secures the outer sheath of the cables to the motor. There are two spring loaded levers/rods which lock into a brass barrel threaded on the cables. Push against the spring tension and turn the lock 90 degrees and it will allow the rod to slide out of the barrel. The working end of the cables have a flat spot with a hole through it. This hole is held by a pin in either the throttle or shift arm. The throttle and shift arms will have a retaining clip which is either plastic or metal. On my motor the throttle has a plastic clip which can be lifted slightly and turned 90 degrees to release the cable end from the pin. The shift arm has a metal clip with a screw in it. When you loosen the screw the clip slides back to release the cable. Your retainers might be slightly different but they do the same thing. NOTE: Mark the cables as they are removed so you don't reverse them. They are interchangeable but your adjustments will be fouled up.

After the cables are loose slide them out of the front of the motor. Tape the barrels in position so they do not turn. Moving the barrels will change your throttle and shift adjustments.

You can also remove the ends of the cables from the MerControl. If you split the case in half the cable ends attach with a small pin and cotter pin. Be careful when you split the control halves, there is a small detent ball and a flat steel spring which may fall out. They are easily replaced but you don't want to loose them.

Ken G, you seem to know a lot about this, i just bought a Mercontrol, the box is together, and i have a 20HP blue band, i have no idea how to connect it to the shift/throttle, i dont see where the barrels should go, and how the wire should attach.

Do you have any pics?

Thanks,
Daniel
