Mercury Force Outboard Stuck Up

My trim motor has failed in the up position. While I wait for a new one, is there a way to lower engine manually so I can use the boat?

the trim pump should have a manual release on the resivor. you can release it as the oil / hydro fluid comes out the weight of the engine + gravity should lower it if you dont have a manual release on the resivor try disconnecting the hydro lines just besure to reconnect / close anything ya opened before taking it out on water.

I have a similar problem. My 90 hp Mercury is in the up position. We screwed up and took the battery out for the winter before lowering the motor. It's a pain to uncover, etc to put the battery back in. I have seen references to a bypass valve in other posts, but can't find one on mine. I took the bottom plastic plug out of the reservoir thinking the fluid might drain out and the engine would lower. The reservoir was empty so I'm guessing all the oil was used to raise it? Any ideas on how I can lower it without hooking the battery back up? Thanks.

If you can uncover the engine, on the starboard side there will be two relays One will have a heavy blue wire and one will have a heavy green wire. put ground from the battery to the blue wire and positive to the green wire, the motor will run the trim down. This is if you have a Mercury with the Mercury relays. Otherwise, unplug the blue and green wires inside the cowl and do the same.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I can't take the cover off. It's on a pontoon and in "nook" between the fuel and battery compartments. Would stripping each wire near the reservoir and connecting as you suggest work? Thanks again.

Sure, you can clip the cable and jump positive to green and negative to blue. It is not the best solution and not one that I would do--extra connections to corrode and fail. But, if you feel it is your only choice--

You can use a separate battery--you don't need the one in the boat. Don't cut too near the tilt motor: Leave enough wire so you can attach bullet connectors. Afterward, use shrink tubing bullet connectors and for extra insurance cover the connection with silicone RTV. Later, if you need to do it again, you can scrape off the RTV and disconnect the bullets.

Of course, this assumes that the relays are bad and not the motor itself. Depending upon year, there are several other options for lowering the engine.
