I need to get an inline 5/16" fuel filter for My 90 horse Mercury, is this something that I can get at an auto parts store, or do I need a specific one for boats? S&H seems high just about everywhere online for just one product, or I would just order one online. Thanks

To be on the safe side I would go to a MERC dealer

Re: Mercury Fuel Filter..

Merc filters are very good. Other brand fuel filters sold specifically for outboard motor use would be OK too.

Getting a fuel filter from an auto parts store is not a good idea for various reasons. One good reason is that you can not be sure how much fuel flow restriction an auto type fuel filter may cause. Unlike modern cars which have strong fuel pumps that push the fuel through the filter, outboards have a relatively weaker fuel pump that sucks the fuel from the tank through the fuel filter. If an auto engine has a restricted fuel line, it just does not run well. If a 2-stroke outboard has a restricted fuel line, there is a good chance of melting down a piston or two.
