I have gas spraying out of the tube that is located just above and forward of the butterfly for the choke. It only does it it after the motor runs for about 2 or 3 seconds then floods me out. Then I pull start about 5 or 6 times and it still dribbles out and down the carb. After that, it stops and the motor fires again only to flood out after 2 or 3 seconds. Is this an idle screw issue ( I closed it all the way and still it did it)? How do I make it stop? Please help, I am stuck

We are always glad to help out a troubled Mercury owner! I would say you need to re-build that carb. The float valve is acting up on ya' by the sounds.

sounds like time to clean the carb. If you are in a rush, you can try running the engine with no tank connected. Once the fuel in the carb is used up, reinstall the tank hose. A harsh prime with the squeeze ball can in some cases, purge the needle and seat and get you on your way. Cleaning the carb is always the best solution when flooding.....

man thanks, this is the second time i needed help on a merc and they are no where around. I did clean the carb last night. It sat for 3 years. It was pretty yuckie. I got the jets and everything real good. When i squeeze the bulb, fuel comes spraying out of the before mentioned tube. I don't understand the purpose of that tube since fuel from the bowl goes up a tube thru a jet and into the carb well behind the choke butterfly. Do you know what this tube is for? Maybe if I understand it, I can beat it!!

I found a diagram of the carb :) .. at least I think it the right one  ... but it was no help.

My first though is that is flooding due to defective float valve. Did you check the float and its needle valve.
Does the needle seat properly and shut off the fuel flow when the bowl is full?

The tube is likely the "balance tube" which vents the bowl to atmosphere.

Ha! You guys, as usual, were right again!!! I got a new needle (seat not in stock) and it corrected the problem. Thanks everyone. I appreciate your help very much
