i have a 82 mercury 140 hp. i got it out on the lake after getting the carb rebuilt and it runs excellent except from a stop if you give it full throttle it hesitates for a second then goes. is there any way to improve this?

Assuming you are talking about a MERCRUISER 140 HP inline 4 cylinder IO engine and not a 140 hp MERCURY outboard.
Several things could caust the hesitation. Carb adjustment, carb problems (acceleerator pump), in need of a tuneup etc.

Re: mercury hesitation

It's kind of important to check the spring on the accelerator plunger, use the stiffer one if the kit comes with a weaker one.

Timing could be to high too. Or too low.

Unless you run preimum gas your timing should be at or a degree or 2 later then specs. Today's gas just don't have same poop as the good ol' days.

Black smoke is unburnt gas. see if there is an adjustment to shorten the stroke on the accel pump or just bend the pump rod....
Assuming that is your problem it's a trial by error thing and may take a few tries to dial it in.
