I figure I might share what I learned rebuilding my I6 distributor today (replacing the trigger/distributor housing). Maybe it'll help somebody trying to figure out how to get the thing apart, which was my biggest hangup. I'm relatively new to outboard motors, so if you see anything wrong here, let me know! The pics only cover reassembly, but you should be able to just follow the steps backwards if you need a guide in taking the distributor apart.

Depending on your motor, you'll need a flywheel puller, 15/16" socket and a way to hold the flywheel still to get the flywheel off so you can remove the distributor from the motor. Your motor may vary from mine (this is on a 79' 90HP I-6).

New trigger - this is a CDI/Rapair reman unit, part number R393-3736.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Trigger.jpg

I managed to damage the top bearing when taking apart the distributor, but found out that www.motionindustries.com carries the exact same bearings for 10 and 13 bucks apiece. Anybody know how much they are through the dealer? The top bearing is a Fafnir S5KDD, the bottom is a SKF 6002.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Bearings.jpg

Start by installing the bearing into the bottom of the distributor housing. Don't forget the circlip! Then put the spacer in place over the bearing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Bearing_Install1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Circlip.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Spacer.jpg

Lay the trigger wheel in place, and carefully slide the rotor shaft throught he bearing. Be careful to align the wheel with the notch in the shaft before tapping it home.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Trigger_Wheel.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Rotor.jpg

Slide the sleeve over the rotor shaft, install the nut, then push the top bearing into place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Sleeve.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Nut.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Top_Bearing.jpg

Tap the post for the spring into place - don't forget to put the advance stop piece in place underneath it. Install the spring.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Post.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Spring.jpg

If you took apart the parts for the throttle assembly, put them back together now like so. I managed to find the indentations the screws made, so I could put it back exactly how it was. Grease all of the sliding surfaces of the distributor. Put the appropriate washer rings in their places before assembling the distributor, making sure the spring is installed with the tall post resting between the stops.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Throtle_Parts.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Grease.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Assembly.jpg

Install the two lock ring pieces on top of the bearing. Make sure the part with the tabs is on the bottom. Screw the cap on until snug, and then back it off until the assemblies turn freely. Bend the locking tabs into the notches on the cap.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Lock_Ring.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/Lock_Tabs.jpg

You're all done. Follow these steps in reverse to disassemble.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/pyromaniacal/Silverline/Distributor/All_Done.jpg

That's all. Good luck and happy boating!

Re: Mercury I6 Distributor Rebuild + Pics (56K Friendly)

Silverline, I attempted to swap distributor triggers myself once, but gave up (found out trigger was good). Thanks for the step-by-step.
