Hi all, I have a 50hp ELPTO Merc with no model number on the stern bracket, the cylinder block serial number is 9592697. Any ideas on age and model type would be appreciated. Also struggling to remove gear housing to inspect impeller..

Looks to be a 1990 Model. Is it a 3 Cylinder? Has the lower unit dropped at all? Even a 1/2"?

Re: Mercury identification

Hi Rick, thanks for the reply, yes it is a three cylinder but recently has stopped pumping water on idle. Going off Sherm's tech tips I have removed the rear nut and washer from inside the trim tab cavity, also one a few inches forward of this and the two side locknuts have been loosened ready to be removed when gear housing drops sufficiently, the housing has dropped maybe 1/3 inch, pulling the gear housing the resistance point where it rocks appears to be in the middle on the line of the drive shaft, in total I have removed/loosened 4 nuts, is there any I have missed ?. Regards..

P.S. Apart from the nut in the trim tab cavity Sherms tech tips describes there being two nuts on the bottom of the anti cavitation plate, these being side by side, mine has only one in the middle.

No I havn't Rick, this was not mentioned in the notes I have. If it is straightforward enough to do I'll continue otherwise I will wait until the Service Manual arrives, regards Keith.

P.S. I shouldn,t be posting in this forum, how do I move this topic into the right area..?

I have now moved this topic to the Mercury repairs area under the title of "Removing lower unit".. Thanks all..
