mercury identification

hey everyone,<br /> I have a mercury outboard 20hp.<br />serial #5083500.model# is a 200.Lightening ignition is diplayed on a crome cover plate at the front of the motor.The motor color is black with silver "mercury" on a red stripe on the lid.What year are we talking about and how were they for dependabilty??

It's possible someone has retrofitted earlier cowls on the motor, or perhaps swapped out the lower unit? <br /><br />Does the serial number on the clamps match the one stamped in the motor block? Number should be stamped on the starboard side of the block, near the rear of the top cylinder's water jacket...<br /><br />The Lightning Ignition was not Mercury's best effort, and it would be VERY nice if you're had the later 1970s all electronic ignition...<br /><br />What color is the small skirt cowling below the belly pan cowling?<br /><br />- Scott
