Hi,

I have a 1993 mercury 60 hp that has a thermostat, a water pressure activaged bypass and a temperature sensor. I just bought a 1982 115 hp inline 6 and cannot find any thermostat or temperature sensor. How does this engine regulate its temperature and tell you if it is too hot? Is there a way to rig a temperature sensor to send the temperature to my console? Lastly, what temperature should this engine run at.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can shed som light on this subject.

RAR

It does not regulate. So long as it pees strong AT IDLE you outta have adaquate cooling. To the right of the #1 spark plug there may be a hole tapped to put a sensor.

-W

Probably be better off putting a pressure sensor in that hole that Clams mentioned. The big bangers run pretty hot, but if it's pumping over say 12 psi at high revs, it's cooling OK.

Thank you for your input. I just thought that it was strange that with all the temperature controls and monitors on the modern engines, the older engines were able to cool adequately without any controls, help or warnings.

RAR

No. The hole I mentioned is tapped in the head, not the water jacket. Put a pressure sensor on the back water jacket cover where the brass plug is.

-W

Re: Mercury inline 6 cooling

I had 2 sixs, a 1978 90hp for 6 yrs and a 1984 115 for 14 yrs. I had pressures gauges, With new pumps they never out out more than 7psi ( I looked at a picture I took of the gauges, so I was a little off ). The V6s could go up to 15psi though. There were 2 different gauges, 1 for the inlines 0 - 15psi and another for the V6s 0 - 30psi
