I have a 1974-75? Mercury 402 SN# 3596704, I was wondering what other model/HP outboards could I use for the lower drive? the reason i am asking is that i bought it not running and now i got the engine purring but I only have forward and neutral.
Things I have done.....The remote cables are not connected so i know its not out of adjustment, The mechanicals/levers under the cowl slide smoothly thru all positions. Forward clicks in one direction and turns engine(with compression) in the other.
Things I have noticed.....The prop, when moving opposite(clicks) moves out a little maybe a 1/4 inch(is that normal?), the engine lock, the thing that you can adjust with the holes and controls the bar that runs down to the lower drive is really stiff, to the point that you have to pull the bar to raise the motor. Someone told me that this is were the reverse lock mechanism is. The rod with alot of pressure does move slightly up and down but doesnt seem to help with actuating reverse. can someone please explain how this works before i remove the lower end. and I do not know if someone has been dropped the lower end. i have read in previous posts that it might be out of adjustment? please help....
P.S. I do need the compatability becasue it might be easier to buy a used drive from someone rather that rebuild this one....Thanks Steve
