Luck of a Texas boy consists of the following. Trying to remove lower unit to replace water pump
which has yet to be accomplished I broke off the left fin above the prop and all the way off. Ready to just set it on fire.... Told by the office boat gurus who pay others to fix everthing that it does not matter and also told there is a kit that will go over the fins. Well when you got a chance please tell me the bad news. Thanks Graves

Re: Mercury lower unit fins

I have seen kits for reparing a skeg (single fin below the prop), but haven't seen any for the anti-cavitation plate.

Maybe it can be welded. I would look for a local shop that repairs outboard skegs and talk to them.

Thank you gentlemen.... This makes my day. This old boat MUST get back in the water. It was left to me by my grandfather, my hero, and my mentor.
Thanks again Graves

You can buy the cavitation plates most prop shops have them, shouldn't be a problem

Hey Graves, good advice so far. No one has said it, so I will: you can get this stuff repaired/welded at a shop that does aluminum welding. Call or ask around - there's likely to be a shop in your town that has kind of become the boat specialist. I know in my town, there's several shops that do aluminum welding, but just a few that have good experience in boat and motor work. I don't know if they'd need the part you broke off or not. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't need it, but it might make their job easier, cheaper. Then, you could prime and paint it, no one would ever know. I love when I break things but can fix them so nobody knows! Good luck.
