Mercury/Mariner 8 HP Serial Number

I just obtained a 8HP Mercury or Mariner 2 cycle ouboard. I was told it is a mid 90's motor but I'm not sure. I'm having a difficult time finding the serial number. I looked on the transom mount but found no numbers or plates. On the cylinder block there is a round aluminum plate that looks like a freeze plug and it has the number B269273 above a <br />large capital letter M. Is this the serial number? Where do I cross check this so I can find the year?<br />Thanks.

It could be either a Merc, or a Mariner, they used a common set of serial numbers for some motors. But your number is a 1988.<br /><br />8hp B233200 - B385499 1988 <br /><br />A mid 90's serial number would start with a <br />0, d, 0d, or a 0g.
