Re: Mercury Mark 30 Electric start?
Not hard to add it on. If you are using it as a tiller, you can go basic and add just the flywheel, starter motor, solenoid and related wiring with a motor-mounted start button - skipping the electric choke items. A little more advanced would be to add the stator and rectifier to have battery charging capability (assuming the flywheel you choose has magnets in the rim). Further advancement would have an original style plug-in adapter with extended wiring if you wish to use the motor with remote controls (which would involve adding the remote control items and removing the tiller).
The flywheel off any of the 1956-1958 Mercury Mark 30E models, as well as most of the Mark 55E's from 1956 to 1958 should work. In late 1958 they changed the Mark 55 crankshaft to a larger taper on top so those flywheels will NOT fit the Mark 30 crank taper.
Make sure the lower unit is in very good shape as that is the weak point on those motors. It is a mildly upgrade lower unit from the Mark 20/25 models and is stressed a bit by the Mark 30 powerhead. Check the gear oil frequently, replace as necessary.
