I just picked up a 1958 merc 78 super marathon six and just wanted to get some opinions on this motor. Is it as goog as the merc advertising says it is? Does anybody else have one? I'd like to hear peoples experience with this motor. Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

It's as good as Merc advertising said in 1958. In 2014, who knows? A lot can go wrong in 56 years unless it sat unused and properly preserved.

They are a disireable collecter motor.-------There is no gear shift.--------The motor is stopped and started again running backwards.----It has a special control box , starter that operates in both directions.---Also flapper valves on the water pump.--------------Nice sounding motor in proper tune.

Thanks racerone, I have several other motors from 1964 to 1972 but I had no idea that these motors had no gear shift in it. I cant wait to get this motor back in the water.
