The engine is turning over, all plugs are sparking, plugs are wet with fuel, kill switch is working (shorted it), grounds seem fine (shorted some to check). I don't know how one tests the spark adequacy but I hooked up a voltmeter and saw .3V DC at each plug if that helps; what should one see? Just no igniting, noted by sound and the fact that fuel drips out of leg.

The serial number suggests it is a 1984. I am attatching a picture. Could somebody also let me know what the two parts are I point out in the picture?

Thanks,

Tyler

#1 is the set of ignition coils #2 is the switchbox. You'd need a peak reading volt-meter to measure the voltage at the plugs.

Your problem could be as simple as a faulty starting procedure too.

-W

Re: Mercury Outboard 50HP Not starting.

I have had the engine running for 5 months now, and had no trouble starting it in the past, other than flooding it sometimes. The last while, I experienced it cutting out while running sometimes. Was not sure what was going on there.

Normally to start I pressure up the bulb, hold the choke on, and turn the key. Now it no longer works.

Ok try advancing the throttle a little too. When it cut out while running did it feel like it ran out of gas or someone just threw a switch?

You might wanna ohm out the stator as per the manual - just a hunch.

-W
