I have a 1972 Mercury 40hp. outboard motor
(Model 400). I would like to bypass the
key switch that is on the controls and install
a new 3 position (Ignition/Start/Battery)
key switch on the console of the boat. Can this be done. The key switch and all wires in the controls are all bad. If this can be done does anyone know how the cables from the motor attach to this 3 position key switch. I would appreciate any help. I am very confused about this.

Wakem

If you will post your e-mail address I will send you the wiring diagram for your motor. In answer to your ?, yes but it requres a new switch and you are better off getting a boat switch than just getting a switch from the auto parts store if you are not really electrically inclined.

My email address is wakruem@aol.com. I purchased a key switch ( 3 position ) from a local
boat shop. I hope this works. Thank you very much for responding.

Wayne Kruemmel
wakruem@aol.com

Captain RickRick1 are you still out there. You sent me some information last year about connecting my Mecury outboard to a after market
key switch (designed for boats). I seemed to have
misplaced the wiring diagrams that you sent me. Would it be possible to resend them.

Thank you very much,

Wayne
