My Mercury 35 hp outboard motor kicks up when in reverse. The engine flys out of the water when we use reverse.

Re: Mercury reverse kick up

Hey dit...how ya' doin, welcome to iboats forum.

Sounds like the reverse lock is not engaging. Mercs lock down in neutral and reverse and unlock in forward so that if ya' hit something in the water doin' a hunded the motor will fly up and lessin' thedamage. If yer not familiar with the reverse lock out, 1) take it to a mech that can check the lock out cam is in the right position or 2) get a manual that will explain how to do it. To check the lock out cam requires dropping the lower unit.

If you look at the transom lock down under the midsection, there should be a latch device that hooks up to the tilt pin when in neutral and reverse. It will look like two hooks. Watch it while a helper goes to neutral and then reverse. Remember to spin the prop while shifting.

If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask here on the forum.
