i have a 1989 mercury the serial is 9542664. She stars fine and ticks over ok, when i turn the throttle and put it into gear she dies, i notice also that when i open the throttle via the engine stightly she will pick up but then the engine will pop and a load of smoke will come out from a port in the uper leg but she will carry on running. could this be a carb or timing problem?
