first off, JB, please dont move this , cause i know you wanna :)

now on to business...
i have a 1960 glasspar citation with the factory RIDE GUIDE steering from mercury. untill about 4 months ago, this boat had my mercury 1150 , 1976 hanging off the back. motor has sinced moved on to a newer boat.

NOW i want to install my 1972 evinrude 50hp.

will the RIDE GUIDE steering cable connect to the evinrude? it all looks the same EXCEPT the very end of the RIDE GUIDE cable ... instead of the standard bolt hole at the very end of the cable, it has a small ridge around the outer edge and no hole.

i installed the mercury motor onto my other boat, whcih had the normal standard style steering cable and everything went A.O.K

hmmmm, anybody know this one, or did i stump ya's

m ike

Re: mercury "ride-guide" steering cable

Mike, This may need to go to the Evinrude/Johnson or general section, unless the Merc experts have crossover knowledge.

The old Johnson/Evinrudes did not have tilt tube steering, and I do not know when they changed ovet to tilt tube steering. If your motor doesn't have a hollow tilt tube, or the correct threads on the end of the tilt tube, you will need to install a "Clamp Block" and "Support Tube". These can be obtained at marine stores like West Marine ($120) or BoatUS.

Also, have you checked to see if the control cables will fit?

Sounds to me like part of your cable is missing,There should be a hole as shown,or if real old,a hole as well as threads.
DHP

Re: mercury "ride-guide" steering cable

I had an old Sea Ray with Merc Ride Guide connected to a 140HP '85 Johnson. The "L" shped piece in the picture was not used. A SS clevis deal (an OMC part) attached to the bottom of the motor steering yoke and to the Ride Guide end. I got a replacement clevis less than 3 years ago from a J/E dealer ... don't have the boat anymore. Any dealer should be able to find the part for you. I replaced the cable at one time, and it had a hole in the end connector. I think yours should also have it.
