I just purchased a mid-90's 4cyl mercury 40hp tiller engine.
Fabulous so far, except I'm not sure about the serial number.
The previous owner had painted over the tag, so after some careful paint removal, I was able to get the serial number.
The number is OGxxxxxx - in the references I've found, I don't see a 6-digit (not including the OG) serial number. Using the search on this page: http://www.**********/parts/search/Merc/Mercury/parts.html I was unable to find the model/year.
Is there somewhere else (the engine block?) where the serial number is contained. There are no other labels on the engine that I can find ... is there somewhere I can find the model number? I don't even know the exact year of the engine.
tia,
Don
