I bought a boat and just finished rebuilding the engine, runs like new. Problem is the side mount that came with it isn't working properly. Picture ---->http://www.mercurymarine.com/media/mercury/images/gauges-and-controls/controls_side_mount.jpg
It looks like that one. I'm having trouble going from forwards to neutral to reverse. It's like trying to pulla lever that is stuck. The gears aren't moving smoothley at all, way too much effort. It works, but it's just not working like it should. Ideas?

Disconnect it from the motor & confirm the sticking is IN the remote mount, not in/on the motor end.

Yup, I'm bettin it's your cables. I just went thru a similar situation on my Johnson Motor. It was a combination of the Cables and a broken piece in the Control. They are NOT that difficult to work on so do like JBC says and disconnect the cables from the motor and see if they move easier. If not, I betcha they have a kink or are just wore out. What year is the boat?
