Mercury SN# = What Year?

My SN# is 5609075. It's a 20 HP. Tiller. Also is there anyway I can convert to remote steering. I've got the steering cable and wheel. The rod slides throught the motor, but the tiller handle is in the way. Also I don't have an idea about the engine throttle and shifting. Thanks

Your motor is a 1980/81 model, the motors in each year had the same serial number.<br /><br />As regards converting a tiller console controlled, you'll need a control box with the correct cable ends. Try on ebay for a mercontrol box, there's always some for sale.<br /><br />As for steering, just take your tiller handle off? Maybe post a picture so we have a better idea of what your problem is.
