I bought second hand jet boat with 1998 Mercury Sport Jet 175 hp engine. The mechanic replaced a switch box, serviced the carb. and cleaned the fuel tank, replaced water separator filter. I took the boat for ride for slighly over 1 hour and shut off the engine. 15 minutes later I tried to restart the engine but found it hard to start. I used the choke on and off alternately. Finanlly the engine started and i took it back without waiting further. What will cause such problem?

Perhu,

Check out www.sportjetworld.com for their formus dedicated to this engine.

Hard starting is common with the Sport Jet 90 and 120, but not sure about the 175. My sport jet 90 can be hard to start and all carbs are recently rebuilt. I have to give it 1/4 throtle and somtime hit the choke, even if the engine is warm.

Ken

I have 1999 sport jet 120 with the auto enrichment system. And started having starting problems at the end of the last season. Do you have auto enrichment, I bought the manual from Mercury. It's a little long to explain how the process if you do not have it. I spent some time talking to the Mercury tech and the marina tech on it. Try cracking the throttle to start.

Re: Mercury Sport Jet 175 Hard Starting

Thanks to kenimpzoom and Wave Hopper for the informations. My mechanic installed a choke switch near the throtle control lever. It is easy to start (usually one kick) when I hit the choke switch. But I have to crank for a long time if I do not use that choke switch. The switch wire lead to the manual choke near the carb and he other attached to the block. This afternoon I took the boat for a ride and when I am back to ramp, I shut off the engine and restart immediately without choke. It kick off smoothly. Next time I am gonna try leave the engine off for 15 minutes before restart.
