mercury sportjet engines

i,m looking to buy a used jetboat. an owner of a 94 sea rayder 90hp engine said it ran on premix (2-stroke) however a 95 120hp owner said it was a 4 cycle engine. can anyone clear this up for me

I believe all of these are basically a 2 stroke outboard powerhead, so you would need to mix oil if it doesn't have an automix.

A mercury sport jet 90 is a two stroke. Powerheads are actully Force engines.<br /><br />Be careful of ignition problems on these engines. Check to see if it has a red stator. I have the same boat and its alot of fun. I bought it several years ago with the engine disassembled and in a bucket. The bucket was full of water. Gave the guy $200 for it. Put a rebuilt engine from Mercury in it and love it. Got another brand boat with one in it that the guy gave me the title to last year. No one could get it running correctly. Took me some figuring but on his last run, it ran like it never ran before. Half way across the lagoon it put a rod thru the side. He trailered it back and handed me the title before driving off. Still looking for a crank and one rod.
