I have a 1966 Merc 650S, 4 cyl, sn #2018755. It runs great but is small for today's standards. It is on a 1966 (16') Starcraft aluminum runabout. New it would turn ~32mph. With hull buildup, dinged prop, etc it only turns about 24-25 mph. We are in t5he process of restoring before death. The engine and boat were bought as a combo. The transom is still good and strong but is a short one. I need to know gross engine weights to substitute for a more powerful motor - considering that modern engines are fuel injected and more efficient, it would seem that 20 -30-40 more horsepower could be attained without adding stern weight by going to a newer engine. Where can one find weight specs on various engines.

You can go to the NADA site and click on outboards and look at the various models and weight..

web page

For those interested: the weight of outboard motors varies more by number of cyl.s rather than horsepower-within a given HP range. So, the transon strength becomes more important than the stern weight. You may actually be able to lower the stern weight and still get a 20-30-40 HP increase - as long as the transom is strong enough to handle the additional thrust.

spirit; you also might want to check the hp rating on that hull. there should be a rating plate on the transom starboard side.
