Hullo (

My gears make a grinding noise when I put the motor in REVERSE and not when in FORWARD. The gear cables are not slipping and all screws have been tightened.

Can someone with a EXPERTISE in this motor please reply as to what miht be going on inside the motor. There is no clutch just two mating cogs so whats the problem?.

Also water comes out midsection of motor when muffs are feeding bottom inlet vent with water. This is when motor not running. When motor running water does not run out mid section but through normal outlet. Is it possible that there is a brak in the hose or something like this?. But the pressure out of the outlet is not strong but reasonable. Again an EXPERTS comments please.

Marley, sounds to me that you might be easing the motor into reverse instead of the al at once put in gear motion.

If you try to put in gear easy, they will/do grind. Forward or reverse.

Water will come out in mid section when engine is not running.

Also the stream from the pee hole will not be as strong on muffs as it in sumerged in water as in lake/river.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Do you know when the last time the impellar was changed?

Generally, both forward & reverse:

From neutral to throttle is added there should be enough movement to engage gear + a little free play.

If you just move the lever outside neutral the gears wont engage full and the ratching will occur.

Engaging gears should always be done in 'one fast, firm and gentle' movement.
This takes properly adjusted cables to work. Not only adjusted to minimize slack, but also adjusted to proper positioning of linkage.

Hey guys,

yas I agree with te one firm motion. And this is what I do. I was told to move the gear lever quickly the point where you've just got it in gear but the prop is not giving any power.

But even when you do that in reverse (quickly ) there is still a crunching noise and not in forward.

I have a subaru car which I have been told is not a synchronised gear box. I also get a crunching noise when I put it in reverse and have been told that it is normal.

So I take it from this that the crunching is normal and that the water flow out of the mid section is normal.

So I'm happy.

Cheers.

You might get some brief 'grinding' when shifting, even with a quick motion. If the grinding continues even after the shifting motion has been completed, then you're not engaging the gear fully. It's possible that with time the shift cam has worn a bit and you might be able to make up for that by adjusting the shift cable to compensate...
- Scott
