What is this and can it cause me to lose spark at all of the coils? Where is it located? The manual only tells me it is there but no indication on how to check it or locate it.<br />Thanks for any help! :D

Re: Mercury tilt stop switch

The mercury switch will not allow your Motor to attempt to start(Starter will not even turn) if it is defective. But,I assume that you can turn it over to check for spark, as you say you have none. So, I don't think that is your problem. I am not real familiar with Mercs, although I did have a 67' 65 HP many years ago and I remember the mercury switch was a safety to protect your motor from turning over and starting if the motor was tilted in the "Up" position(Out of the Water). You may be able to get more help from others as to what the real problem is. Good Luck,

Re: Mercury tilt stop switch

I've got a 73 Merc 850 and my mercury switch is located on the right side of the motor (as you're looking to the rear of the boat) on the powerpack, next to the distributor. It's not very big and mine only had one wire running out of it. Like rick said, it's a safety feature to keep you from starting your motor if it's trimmed up (out of the water). I need/should replace mine, but my boat dealer said it wasn't imperative that I replace it so I haven't yet. Just took it off and left it off. I plan on replacing it this winter though.
