When a relay goes bad, does it stop working completely, or will it work sometimes and not others, or is it possible for a relay to get hot and stop working and when it cools down start working again?

Is there something in trim circuit system that can get hot and cause the trim to stop working until it cools???

Yes. The trim motor can get hot and fail intermittently. So can the relays. Check them first and then the motor. Put 12 volts directly to the trim motor hot wires and see if it works. Relays can and do stick...

Re: mercury trim relays

I had a later model 4-cyl where both up and down relays were intermittant, couldn't diagnose them until they started acting up when the boat was brought in for servicing. After jumpering a relay out it was obvious what was going on!

A bud of mine had similar problems with the starter solenoid on his M-90-3; bad contacts and the starter wouldn't turn over fast enough. One new solenoid later and it worked great.

Aftermarket (Sierra) replacement relays/solenoids for these aren't too spendy, either.

Cheers........ed

Is that on the 99' 225 Motor? Can you give us a serial numer? Dealer will heve them, also. My bet is on the trim motor, though.
