Re: Mercury upgrade

Perhaps if you were more specific about what motor it is you'd get some advice based on your information. Theres a lot of different Mercury motors in a given year.

Re: Mercury upgrade

My boat came with 1981mercury 50hp
I looked at a 1994 mercury 40hp two stroke, it's a one owner motor woth1500 worth the work done in 2010
Compression is rock solid,he wants 1700
There's another 40hp Mercury 1999 the guy wants 1800 for that
What control changes ect would I need to do for either of these motor hope this is a little clearer

Re: Mercury upgrade

Everything should be the same. Should bolt up and plug in.

Re: Mercury upgrade

Shift and throttle cables should work fine. Electrical is very likely completely different, but may be adapted. Steering and fuel lines are compatable or can be made compatable, easy.

Re: Mercury upgrade

So it turns out the motor is a 1996,the, linkeage looks way different as i thought it would the shifter and tbrottle
Portion, other than that looks pretty close, would I just swap his whole controller over shifter ect?how does the shifter linkeage come off the motor?i feel silly asking all the questions in just have never owned a boat, plus I will have to dril new holes to mount the motor
It was easier putting transmission and engine in cars

Re: Mercury upgrade

The throttle and shift cables simply disconnect at the motor. On the '81, there are two 3/8" nuts that need to be removed. Then remove the barrell nuts from the clamp and pull the cables out of the motor. They will install the same way, except the clamp is a piece of plastic.

Re: Mercury upgrade

Unless you have a harness from the '96 motor, you will need to splice it somehow.
