I have a 1988 200hp black max with a bad L/U. I have shimmed gearcases in school (MMI) but that was 2 years ago. I haven't managed to get it apart yet, and am considering cutting the bearing carrier out. Do you have to pull the shift shaft to get the bearing carrier out?

Thanks!!

Re: Mercury v6 lower unit

You are opening a can of worms on this unit. First mercury didnt use a preloaded driveshaft in 1988, 1985 was last year when they went to upside down bearing. If you damage housing, you can only use a pre 1985 as the driveshaft housing area are different milled, thus you cannot take a newer style shaft & bearing and convert it. You cannot use the gears in a newer housing as they are cut different thus the preload shaft. The shift shaft only needs removed to remove prop shaft.

So i could use a large gear puller to get the carrier out using the propshaft as a pressing point?

Kind of as long as the puller jaws do not dig into sides of gearcase. I would soak it in a good penetrating fuild(not WD40) and use heat as salt water makes em grow together.
