Mercury value question.

My parents have given me a 1971 Mercury 20 HP outboard. The title says 1971 but I think it is an 81. <br /><br />That is not really the question though. The motor is in VG condition with new coils and water pump. My parents are the ones that always want to make sure, to the penny, that my brother and I get the same in gifts or money. <br /><br />They want to send him a check equal to the worth of the motor.<br /><br />On todays market, what should this motor be worth?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />David.

Nothing more than $ 200 - $ 300... <br />best way to detemine is to check on ebay. I'd do a search like you are going to buy one of those.

Thats hard to say. I see 6 horse kicker Mercs older than that go for around $300 all the time, but a 20 horse is in that grey area of not being big enough or being too big, which drops value. I see nothing wrong with $350 to $450 if it is in excellent condition.

Best way to tell what year it is is the accent color on the motor. Red is 71 and blue is 81.<br /><br />Craig

It is a 1971 then. It is in excellent condition. Took it out for a run this weekend. Excellent is all I can say.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />David.

Evin<br />They don't make them like they used too! I had a 71 20 merc back in 71. I ran it on a 14 ft Arkansas traveler. it would scream. This motor was actually 1/2 of a 50!

Give us a serial and model number. We'll tell you what it is.<br /><br /><br />That engine can be a very fine runner. If you are particular about maintenance. If not, sell it.
