Mercury vs Tohatsu?

I'm looking for a 18 or 20 hp outboard. Any difference between Mercury and Tohatsu?

I have a 25 hp merc EFI 4 stroke... it's made by tohatsu... Merc has the shifter built into the twist grip... tohatsu has a separate shifter at the base of the tiller. I'm not sure about the shifting on the 18's or 20's. I had some hard shifting prob's on mine, but I think it's OK now.

per my research, (some of it done right here) the 4 stroke Mercs in that range are identical to the Tohatsu and nissan with the exception of the tiller arangement. I just bought the Nissan flavor in a 30hp and it was a full $1000 less than the merc.

Thanks. I was able to find a Mercury 20 hp that was used one season for about $2000.
