I realize this is a two part question but, I am looking a purchasing a Lund Fiherman 17' - it can take upto a 150hp and I don't want to underpower it, so I will be puting on a 150hp.

The Mercury does not come in a 150 4 stroke, so I am looking at the Optimx 150 or the Yamaha 4 stroke 150, but in my investigation I though I'd compare the Yamaha 2 Stroke 150's as well.

So much information and I am not a motor guy.... where do I start? What are the real selling features of each? Mercury claims that the 2 strokes gas consumption is 16% better than most 4 strokes...

Any information would be appreciated - also your own experiences would help.

Thanks,

Heath

I dont know much about them but I do know that weigh is a big factor on engines 150hp weighing 450lbs vs a 150hp wieghing 390lbs the lighter one will alow you to go faster. And I read a lot of horror storys about the mantience on 4 strokes..Personally my next motor will be a evinrude E TEC no sched mantince for 3years and lighter then any of the compitition..

You'll get allot more "punch" out of a two stoke, whether it be a direct injected or carbed.

The four stroke phenom. has not been without its troubles: water intrusion into crankcases, etc.

The Merc. Optimax issues have been dealt with and they are quite reliable. You get the two stroke punch and just as user freindly as the four strokes, with about equal fuel economy.

When I buy another outboard, it WILL be a 2 stroke DFI.

Thanks for all the info. I have a friend who runs a Merc 50 4 Stroke and has had no problems. I have been hearing that recent advancements in EFI/DFI technology have made the 2 strokes as good if not better.

What about the noise?
What about Yamaha VS Mercury?

Also - I looked at the Merc Verado - $$$$.

What about the noise?
What about Yamaha VS Mercury?
DFI noise is about equal, depending on brand. Yamaha is not big in DFI. They have put thier eggs in the four stroke basket.

Yamaha and Merc. share many components, in the four stroke arena. However, that relationshiop is evaporating-fast.

If it where me I would go with the Yamaha two stroke or the HPDI. The Merc Verado is a boat ancho, os I would rule that one out completly.
If you are going Merc the Opti is a real nice motor as well.
