the question i have is there supose to be a seal between the plastic tube out from the water pump to the copper tubing coming from the engine? If so is it an o ring just slide it on the copper tubbing and install the whole lower unit? 1973 Mercury 150 tower of power--the reason i'm asking is i'm only getting about 10 pounds of pressure at 4500 rpm's i do have the tell tale stream of water out the enging but it is not very "strong" also what is a poppet valve for the water pump- i really don't think my motor has one but if it does were is it located?

Re: Mercury Water pump

No poppit valve on that motor, but you need a rubber grommet on the pump outlet

Re: Mercury Water pump

There should be a grommet UNDER the plastic tube for the pipe to snug into. The tube is just to guide the pipe in there on install.

Try cleaning out the pee-hole. As long as it pees steadily at idle it's usually OK. 10 pounds is about normal.

-W

Re: Mercury Water pump

the last time i had the boat out in the water, at idle i looked and had a good stream but the next time about 10 minutes later it was more like a trickle--there is a rubber groment under the short tube but there seems to be alot of slop between the plastic tube and the copper tube that is where i was guessing i might need a rubber seal. also where is the poppet valve, is it like a one way check valve or is it to maintain a constant pressure. thanks for your guys help

Re: Mercury Water pump

The plastic tube is for guiding the copper tube into the pump hsg only and not a tight fit. That engine does not have a poppit valve

Re: Mercury Water pump

is it to my understanding that the copper tubing should be sealed by the rubber gromment that the plastic tube is sitting on?

Re: Mercury Water pump

I have a 1995 Mercury outboard long shaft electric 9.9 HP and I have been trying to replace the impeller. It runs well until recently.

I put the motor in nuetral sfift and took off the three bolts but the lower unit only dops down about three inches. That's it. I understood from the parts place that the whole lower unit is supposed to drop down and out. . I have pushed and pulled but the unit will not drop any further. I tried a screw driver but with no luck. Decided a hammer might cause serious damage.

What am I doing wrong? I am feeling confused. Help!
