Mercury won't start

I just installed a new solinoid on a Mercury 84' 35hp and it still didn't turn over. I am going to have a new starter put in but just wondering what else could causing it not to start? How many other things could it be?

Check the wires from the battery to the motor. I had a similar problem and it wound up being a coroded wire under the insulation.
