Mercury xr6 beeping

I just bought a 1988 Bass Tracker with a 1994 Mercury xr6 150hp outboard. Whey the engine is at an idle the warning buzzer for the oiling system beeps constantly. When the rpms increase it stops. The previous owner said that it had been doing this for a while. He said it uses plenty of oil from the tank and the exhaust has plenty of smoke and oily smell. All of this leads me to believe that the oiler is working properly. What would make the buzzer go off constantly? How can I check to see that it is working?

Is there a chance it has a miss at idle. The oil alert taps off the signal to the #2 coil to determine if the engine is rotating. You can move that wire to another cylinder and see if it quits. If it does, then you can troubleshoot the miss in #2.

It could also be the rotation sensor in the oil pump. That is not real hard to replace. There's a multimeter test procedure in the manual.

hope it helps

It runs perfect at idle. It has a little bit of a skip when you are in the water with the prop in gear and just giving it a little gas to get out of the landing area. I ran it for a good 20 minutes today at about 50 mph and the motor still works so it has to be getting oil. Thanks for the help John.

I know the motor works. It's a control/warning system problem. If you let it go and the oiling actually fails without warning you, your motor has less than 30 seconds to live at WOT.

Get the book. Study it. Troubleshoot the system properly.

hope it helps
