I recently pulled my motor and when it came off, the shift rod pulled up. I played w/ it for a few mins and it went back into its spot. My question is, does it only go in one way? Will I fell it when it shfts from forward to neutral or reverse to neutral?

Also, when I put the water muffs on in the driveway, how long should it take to see water coming out of the pee hole after started?
Thanks, Nick

Re: Merury 115 I6 shifter rod question.

Nick, The shift rod can be installed in several ways. It has about 6 splines, so it can be mated to the lower shift shaft 6 ways. it is likely you have it back in the proper position, since the cable should hold it steady, whne it disconnected(if it did actually disconnect).

Water will come out of the telltale after a couple of minutes, long before the motor overheats. If you do not know when the waterpump was last rebuilt, it is smart to rebuild it now.

It does not seem to be in the proper position. Before I put the diff head on, I thought it was corect. Now When I push the rod back and forth it just stays engaged and clicks the other direction when i spin the prop. Do you think I should drop the lower unit? The water pump only has two small trips under its belt, replaced a yr or two ago. I just wasnt sure if it would pee instant or take a bit. Thanks for your help so far.
