Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the metal flake finish on my boat from fading? It has started on the bow.

Any ideas on how to reverse the fading process?

Ranger,

About all you can do is keep it covered or keep it waxed with a wax that is specifically designed to reflect ultrviolet rays. Check with some local paint shops that deal in specialty paint jobs.

As far as restoring it, you'll have to use some VERY fine rubbing compound and lots of elbow grease. Be careful doing this, your gelcoat (clear) may be thin. If you rub to much and get down to the flake the only solution is to have the area resprayed with clear gelcoat.

I don't htink flake boats fade any faster than others-it's just more noticeable.

Re: Metal Flake Fading

Thanks for the info. I noticed yesterday when I waxed it that it looked much better. I thought about trying a buffing wheel maybe next time. The boat stays in a barn with a cover on it, so maybe I can make it last a few more years.

You don't want to blow past your clear coat and into the metal flake. You may want to consider having another layer of clear coat sprayed on...

Walt

Re: Metal Flake Fading

I had similar problem with my old boatyard queen. She sat there for 8 years and never been touched, except for robbing her of parts. So I bought her and kept telling myself what the heck am I getting into. A 27' Bayliner Victoria is not a small boat that you can hand rub. So I rented a buffer, and used polishing compound (not buffing compound, to course a grit, to easy to cut through gel on edges and sharp curves) then I used Maguires Boat/RV wax. Two coats really brought the luster back. The guy I bought it off of swore up and down that it would have to be repainted again to look good. I had tried other waxes also in test areas, but the Maguires Boat and RV wax did the best. It has more carnuba content than others. It is a little pricey, but cheaper than paint! Two weekends, 3 bottles of wax, 1 tub of polishing compound, and alot of sore muscles. Even with a buffer! But it was worth the work. What was purchased for $4K, is now worth twice as much if not more. Any way I suggest the Maguires Boat/RV Wax. Good Luck.

Thanks guys for all the help. I have owned many different boats, but none of them were nice enough to wax. I would like to keep this one looking good.

Ranger 354,
I don't know if it is right, but I always wipe my 330V with armor all, son-of-a-gun etc. after each use and wax it about once a year with turtle wax. The boat is a 90' and it looks great.
Good Luck

Ranger 354,
I went the other day and did not do well. Thankfully spring is around the corner. The catfish, crappie and sandies ought to be biting pretty soon. Oh yeah, and black bass if one likes that sort of thing.
Good Luck,
Little Bear

20 Miles south of Hell and 30 miles from Corpus Christi. I looked up Brownwood on MapQuest and it gave me 3 different ones. I have a sister that lives in Belton up near you. How do you like your Ranger?

Hello,
I am about 100 west of Belton. I bought this boat new in 91' and it has been great. These boats are a bit heavy but they are well built. I honestly don't no of a bass boat that is built better than the old Rangers. I will email you a picture of my boat.
Good Luck,
Little Bear
