Re: Mice

I think you only need one if it is under 26'

What? The snake or the boat?

Seriously, if the mouse can't get out of the bucket once it falls in, how does it get to the top of the bucket while on the outside? Maybe I should I put a little mouse ladder so it to climp up.

Re: Mice

This works with chipmunks so its likely to work for other small critters with buck teeth. Take a bucket or pail and sprinkle sunflower seeds on top of water set at a depth that the rodent will have to stretch a full body lenth and then some to reach the quarry in the bucket. Be sure to cover the water completely so they won't know what's under the seeds. They're greedy by nature and will likely do whatever it takes to get to those seeds. They're also very stupid when it comes to having no fear in the face of gluttony and they'll stretch to get a seed or two, fall in the bucket and drown; they won't be able to climb out. Oh yes, you'll also need a ramp (a small piece of planking will do) with strategically placed sunflower seeds on it to get the little gastronome to scale to bucket's edge so the it can see there's more. Believe me it works and you won't need to use those pesky chemicals.

Re: Mice

something my neighbor taught me. Take a 6 ft long piece of insulation roll it up like it comes stick it in the corner. unless you think youcan kill them all atleast this will contain them. I put the roll in a corner the mice will make there home in the insulation and not in your wires and seats and everything else you can think of. i put that in my shed like that they dont seem to bother the mowers or quads. There gonna get in there no matter what.. this should control where they go. Good luck

Re: Mice

Spearment will work wonders. A friend saw it in a boating mag. and tried it. Fantastic results he says.

I agree on the spearmint oil (not peppermint). We had a HUGE mouse problem in our motorhome. I poured spearmint oil in small tuna cans and put them in different areas of the motorhome. Never saw a mouse again. BTW, you gotta use "good" spearmint oil and not the watered down stuff.

BosnBill,
I've been using that method for years. Actually, I believe I have improved it over the years. As you know, the sunflower seeds eventually get waterlogged and sink to the bottom. So I took a black plastic garbage bag and laid the bucket cover down on it as a cutting guide. Cut out a round circle of the bag and place that plastic carefully on top of the water. Then spinkle just a handful of seeds in the middle. Less seeds, no waste.

I've had one or two "einstein" chipmonks over the years that had figured out how to hang by their back legs to get at the seeds. They had to be taken out by more traditional means before they could reproduce... ;)

Acutally the bucket/ladder is perfect, just add about 4 inches of water inside the bucket, you will catch twice as many.

hmmmm How come not pepperment? I sprinkled that around my boat before storage and it made my eyes water. My insurance agent swears by peppermint. Do you have any justifacation for that statement ? plz enlighten... Thx

Brilliant MrBigStuff. Quite ingenious. I shall have to employ this strategy come Spring. You're right about those seeds getting soggy at which point they're no longer appetizing to the little beasts. I have a squirrel gun handy for the Einsteins, but I'm afraid I'm not as good a shot as you and they're not always bending over facing rearward
