I just purchased a 1978 Ranger Aztec. It had a hotfoot throttle but the hotfoot cannot be moved forward enough for me or my son so we would like to hook the hand throttle back up. It is part # P/N B-63063A1. We can figure out we need a shorter cable but can't figure out how it gets high idle in neutral. the two buttons below the lever are labeled "choke" and "trailer" I have attached a picture of a box that is close to what I have except where this one in the picture says "warm-up", mine says "choke". Any help will be appreciated !

While some boxes have a button at the pivot point of the control lever to get the fast-idle feature, if I recall correctly on this box you would move/pull the lever directly inboard (towards you), which will disconnect shifting function and allow you to advance the lever for fast-idle-only. Once the motor is warmed up, return the control lever to the Neutral position and push it back towards the box.

Now, if your box does have a button at the lever's pivot point, that would be it.

Far as the "Choke" button on your box, I can only assume that it is Indeed for the choke! In that case the choke (or primer depending on what year your motor is) only works when the button is depressed.

So, standard starting drill for most Mercs, pump the bulb up hard, give a bit of fast idle & hold down the choke button while cranking, until the motor starts. Release choke and if it dies, re-choke until it'll run smoothly without.

HTH & maybe a pic of your actual control box would help! ;)..............ed
