mid 80's Mercury 35hp wont go in reverse

I am going to look at a boat for sale that owner states that he had the water pump impellor replaced and now it will not go in reverse and mechanic has skipped town.
what could the problem be? or should I run away fast???!!!

The LU was probly not put back together right. The shifter has to be in the same gear as the LU or it will not be right when done. Not a big problem "IF" that is what it is. If the LU has had the prop shaft removed there could be missing parts there also. Best to take it to another mechanic and see what he would charge, as here labor is $80.PH, unlessyou fix it yourself. Manuals for the motor can be bought here at Iboats. The sale is up to you, and you can use the shifting problem to get a lower price

how much is it? might be worth the gamble at the right price, more than likely just needs the LU pulled back off the put back on right
