I am considering buying a 1985 200hp Mercury, serial #A148677. The owner says it idles good, bogs to about 2500 and then runs out OK. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Mid-range bogging

If the motor your wanting to buy has any problems with it, dont buy it, unless its real cheap and you know for sure how to fix it.
Speaking from experiance, a small problem with a boat motor is garonteed to get worse. When that happens, all a boat is is a hole in the water where you keep throwing money into.
Just food for thought.

Have the guy that owns the boat have a compression test done, if it comes out with less than ten pounds of variation then have the carbs cleaned and new plugs put in along with fresh fuel and change the filters if it has been setting for a few months! Should take care of the problem!

Hasbeen

If you do buy that boat, go ahead and buy a fuel pump diaphram, a $4.00 do it yourself job.
While your at the parts store, buy a small inline fuel filter to fit your hose from your fuel tank and and add it using screw type hose clamps. Go ahead and purchase some more screw type hose clamps and replace those zipp ties on all your fuel and water hose connections, if havnt done so already. I had a problem where my fuel connections was taking on air and that fixed my problem. Why the manufacturers use zip ties, I dont know.
One more thing that may fix that bogging problem. Replace that little fuel line connector that attaches the fuel line to the motor. If you look inside it, you will see a rubber O ring. Those O rings seem todryrott in time and need to be replaced, that may be why its bogging down in the first place. You can buy that thing at wall mart.
Also, go to NAPA and buy some Sea Foam Deep Creep. Its in a spray can. Take the spark plugs out and spray a good amount in each cylinder. Put back together and let set over night. Start motor next morning and spray some in each carborator. Then watch all kinds of nasty stuff blow out your exaust.
Good luck if you buy that motor.
