Mid section is loose, too loose?

Have a 9.8, 1989 Mercury and I noticed today that the mid section is real loose and has lots of play in it. I'm talkin about the part with the 2 clamps. Well right below it there's a round plastic cap (one on each side of section) with a snap ring under the plastic cap. That's where all the play is. I can grab that piece right below the 2 plastic caps and move it in and out about 3/4". Is that the shocks? I looked in my Seloc manual and it doesn't show anything about that in there. Must not be much of a manual. Should show everything. What do I need and how can I get it apart to fix it?

Those are the motor mounts take the snap rings out, screw a small bolt into the mount a put them out one at a time, the motor will hang on the shift shaft so use some care and do them 1 at a time---Bob
