At the price point I am strongly considering this radio and looking for feedback from those who own or have used one. Or if you have another suggestion in the same price range (<80) I would like to hear them as well. Midland has served me well across their product line for a long time. I like that it is water resistant and that it comes with a few power adapters. I can wire a fused cig lighter into my boat in about 30 seconds. With my current application I am not interested in a normal VHF radio, that may be something I acquire in the future.

We are in MO and frequent small lakes so the likelihood I will ever need this is slim. There are a few reasons I want it:

1) Weather. The instant severe alert is a big feature for me because the Midland radio at home has alerted me in this manner many times. I love it. Weather can change in a blink here.

2) It has channel 16 and as someone raised to help other boaters I like the idea that if someone near me ends up needing help I will be in a position to get there and try to render aid.

3) Obviously if an emergency comes along it gives me a method of communication besides my cell phone.

My major question is the range, because I have 0 clue what "5 watts of power" equals out too. I'm used to miles no watts.

so with some reasearch it seems that (enviorment being a big variable of course) the average range would be a few miles. I may hold off until I change boats and have an actual vhf with an antenna on board. I would like it to work in at least a 8-10mile range even on some dense lakes.

I could have sworn I responded to this yesterday.

That's a lot of stuff for not a lot of money. It would be a good addition to a ditch bag and a backup to a fixed mount radio. Antenna height is the main limitaation as far as range goes.

I'm still tempted to get it just for the weather aspect. I would already have ordered it if it would accept an external antenna. Their home radios do, don't see it as a feature here though

It has a removable antenna. If it uses a standard connector, there are adapters to connect to a PL 259 plug.
