Please see posting from 08/25/03.'

Had oil leak from I/O repaired. Brought home and notice milky oil still in my outdrive. I am assumming that my mechanic tested the unit after putting back together but not certain. I have drained to outdrive to examine the oil and did not find much oil. Paid $200 to have gaskets/seals replaced in upper lower unit near u-joint. Should I be concerned that water was in lower unit and boat has not been run since repair? Also, there was only about 1 quart of liquid in the drive?

Thanks,

Marion

Re: "Milkly Oil"

First thing- what type of outdrive? That would help.

My Alpha 1 only takes a little more than 1 quart to fill it. That has oil coming out of the top vent hole when I am filling it, so a quart should be about right.

If the mechanic only worked on the upper drive, he probably removed the lower and set it aside. If you didn't ask him to check the lower unit, he probably didn't. I would have had it been me but some guys are like that.

As for water, if you have milky oil, you have a leak. Prop seal most likely as they catch garbage in the water- fishing line, weeds, etc. Pull the prop and check behind it. Look at the seal and see if there is any visible damage. Prop seals aren't that tough to replace as fas as I am concerned.

Ask him what he did so you know for sure. You do need to find the source of the water as the lower unit lube and water do not like each other and will declare war- taking out your lower unit as collateral damage.

UFM82

I would head right back to the mechanic with the outdrive. If this is a marine mechanic that you paid his price and not a friend doing you a favor, then he did a half a job.No one returns a drive to you with the old contaminated gear oil in it.My mechanic changes the drive oil when he does an impeller whether i ask for the fluid change or not. Also make sure he pressure checks the unit and vacuum tests it too. charlie
