Ok so i finally got my impeller kit suprisingly it had pump cover and all and I was planning on having a friend from work come saturday and help me change it out so I went out a few minutes ago just curious and pulled the drain plug for the lower unit and out came slightly milky oil ........... My question is this is there another set of seals Im going to need to fix this or will the seals I need to stop the water in the lower unit oil be with the numerous seals orings and gaskets that came with my complete impeller /water pump repair kit ........the name of the kit I have is the upper pump housing kit .......... Sorry for sounding stupid or dumb but I'm new to this this being my first boat thanks for all help and advise in advance

If you have water in your drive then there is a leak, you will have to find where that leak is. You can pressure test the drive and spray soapy water over the drive in areas by seal and shaft seals. You will have to seal up all ends to keep it pressurized, or you can sumerge it under soapy water (while under pressure). Leave the upper and lower units together and pressure test it. The upper impeller kit you have will just seal the housing inpeller pump area and the gear lube galley tube connection between the upper housing and lower, (small little orange o ring seal)

But yes if leak is else were you will need diffrent seals per where the leak might be etc...

have ya got a service manual? ya need one if not.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/srvcovr.pdf i think these are active links. ya need either 6 for alpha1 or 14 for alpha1 genII. whichever one ya got.

you'll need to find out where the leak is coming from to decide which seal(s) you need to deal with. here's some info on how to find the leak. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430 look at #8.
a water pump kit likely won't have everything ya need for the repair..

any water in the drive shaft bellows?

be sure there's only one seal on ea. drain/vent plug. they don't always come off with the screw and so sometimes can be doubled up.

there's more places to look once we know more.
