New to me boat. Not sure when the last time the gear oil was changed so I decided to change it before taking the boat out. It didn't have the milk swirl type sheen to it, it was more of just a thick opaque brown / green color. Any input would be great! I hope it's just old and needed changed. Please see the attached images.

Do a 'crackle test'. If it has water in it, find the leak and repair it. No water in the oil? Then just put new in.

What is the "crackle test" ???

Edited: I just googled it - I don't think I have a good enough way of doing that type of testing....

Get a tablespoon of the suspect oil. Heat it with a cigarette lighter. If it pops and crackles its got water in it.

Chris.

Health warning. Oil will become hot, and could splatter. Use appropriate safety equipment.
