just got my own boat and need some pointers its got a 80 horse mariner on it and first of all the power trim would not lift or lower so i filled it with oil and got it working(did not have a drop in it) checked the gear oil in the lower unit not much water and just a little bit of milky oil came out not much tho so i drained it and refilled it up and dont know what to look 4 or what caused this,it has been setting scene 4th of july of 2008 is what he told me,and that was the only time he had it out in about 2 years, so do i have lower unit problems or what do i need to do? any help would greatly be appreciated

Not sure where your at but here in fl we have west marine and they will do a free pressure test to see where and if it's leaking then you just have to replace the seals before it cost you lots more. Check around and see with your local supply stores or marinas

Couple of quick comments:

If your TT sump was empty, where did the oil go....expect to have to replace a seal.

If your LU oil is milky as you said, you have a leak. Could be a dry seal caused by sitting up. If you can't get a pressure test, you can at least replace the blue seals on the drain/vent screws in the LU when you relube it. Keep tabs on it for awhile and if it persists, then get serious about finding a pressure tester person or just pull the LU and do a full seal job and while in there redo your impeller. LU oil has an agent that causes it to stick to metal and resists water wash out. If you use the rig often, the oil will stay homogenized and a little will not be that big of a deal. Just sitting could cause some pitting.

Expect to have some engine fuel problems (varnish) so with fresh gas and engine oil (wherever your engine requires it), might add some Sea Foam to the gas. Does not change the oil ratio; add it but don't include it in your calculations....has oil in it. The can says 1 oz per gallon, but for the first couple of tanks, I'd up it to more like 4 oz per gallon, then back off.

My 2c,

Mark

I would just take it out and run it. Then check it again to see if it is milky again. If it is then start with tests and new gaskets. I am guessing that when you filled it you did it from the bottom? Just a thought.
