I was replacing the gearbox oil in an old johnson gettying it ready to go for the summer and I noticed the oil looked a little off. I would like a knowledgable opinion to tell me if it looks like water has contaminated the gearcase. If it has, I will most likely take it to a mechanic to replace the seals. By the way, it smells horrible. Also it has been sitting a while.

pretty dark...may not be to bad imho water in oil usually make a for a brownish pale milk shake or.... pure water then oil if the gear case was sitting a long time

just replace it (cheap anyway) and recheck after a few weeks to see if the color changed much if not you are probably ok

some folks just change the oil one or two times per summer

lots of utubes on gearacases reseal jobs..and... shift rod seal replacement depending on engine size. you did not indiquate what you have

Take it to a dlr and have it pressure and vacuum checked. Takes the guess work out of where it's leaking.

Thought I would keep you guys updated... Here is a pic of the oil after it has been completely drained. It is more of a ruddy golden color along with the darker oil color and a little milky white in one spot at the top right.

yep it is taking in some water... now how much do you want to spend on this

prop seal.. shift rod seal ..... spagetti seal ....gear case sealer + labor 60-90$/H if you do not do it yourself

or a couple of wallymart gearcase oil tubes at $5 during the summer ..
