I got the engine together in the boat i was given but the starter doesnr spin fast enough to get it to fire. Figures i found this out after i put the exhaust manifolds on but whatever. I have a mini starter and a regular starter from my old chevelle. Do guys run minis in boats? Im thinking it will be easer to get the mini on. Thoughts?

If you are talking about a PMGR (permanent magnet gear reduced) starter as the mini starter, then it should be OK. I use one in my 470. I believe they are marine rated (check to make sure) and their size sure makes it easier to install, especially in tight quarters. Mine is 3 years old and holding up just fine, spins the motor faster than the stock starter.

If the starter was bought for your Chevelle, it is not marine rated. My first question is how was the motor built? My second question is have you checked the starter connections and battery condition?

If it doesn't say MARINE J1171 on top of the solenoid then don't use it in your boat. I say get the small perm mag gear reduction starter motor over the old style field coil monster, way better choice.
